On Thurn und Taxis

I had to write this:

I always thought that adult life would mean no more homework.
Also this is evidence that I would make a piss pour travel journalist

Perhaps it is morbid curiosity; or perhaps a true love of the history of power and privilege I will always wonder at how the other half live. Thankfully living in Bavaria for the time being I can completely indulge in my fascination with castles and royalty. An easy one hour drive from Grafenwohr; Regensburg is a great example of a bustling european capital. Like most cities the tourist attractions, shopping and eateries crowd the old town centers. The architecture is truly a panoramic display of building styles throughout history (not quite as jarring as Munich in which the very futuristic and modern abut the very ancient). It is also a great place to start a river cruise on the Danube (Danau in German) these cruises are not yet in season but come warmer climes there are tours for all sorts of time frames and budgets.

On our first trip to Regensburg there wasn't much of a plan, so it seemed fortuitous that once we got to the town center we espied signs for the Palace. After a less than ten minute walk through some of the most scenic and enticing shopping that I have seen of late we arrived at the Thurn und Taxis Palace. Current home of the 12th Prince of Thurn und Taxis. This family ascended into royalty by merits of inventing a postal service in Europe.

A guided tour is the only way to view the Palace a d Cloister of St. Emmeram. Tours in English are given daily from June 1st till September 15 at 1:30 pm. There are audio tours conducted in English throughout the year. The tour, an hour in half in length highlights some exquisite examples of palatial rococo style and practically oozes atmosphere in the gothic cloister. Our favorite rooms were the mirror room and the crypt. The tour is 11,50 euro a person (however there are group rates available) and unfortunately is not wheelchair accessible. Other restrictions include no food or drink, no pictures, no dogs and you must stay on the carpet! The gift shop was full of little souvenirs to remember your trip by, most of the literature on Thurn und Taxis is in German. All in all it was a great way to learn a bit more about German Royals, get out of the house and spend a lovely afternoon!
